The key is to increase confidence in the euro and not allow various side factors and influences to erode it. This was said by President Iliana Yotova, who opened the conference part of the event The World Ahead 2026 Sofia Gala Dinner, organized by "Economist" magazine in Sofia.

Yotova added that Bulgarian citizens should be transferred as easily as possible along this path.

"The euro has never been a goal that we reach, and the process is ending," noted President Yotova.

In her words, the euro is only a tool for achieving much larger goals. "For the development of the economy, for Bulgaria's integration into the common European economic, political and monetary policies", the president noted.

"Bulgarian citizens could have been better prepared for this moment", believes Iliyana Yotova.

She added that many of the problems that citizens have been facing since the beginning of the year could have been avoided with a more streamlined and structured explanatory campaign, as well as better preparation of the Bulgarian economy and business. Yotova noted that, unfortunately, this did not happen.

The convergence report, received in mid-2025 and addressed to the political authorities, contained many remarks in the form of recommendations about what we have not yet done, the head of state also said. According to her, if we want to feel comfortable in the eurozone today, the recommendations must be implemented.

The President commented that the report tracking the activities of the BNB was far more positive.

Iliyana Yotova also noted that today she has instructed Andrey Gyurov to propose the composition of a caretaker government.

"I will insist on continuous and serious monitoring of the prices of essential foodstuffs, fuels, energy, services, medicines - in order to detect anomalies that are not caused by the introduction of the euro, but speculation," said the head of state.

According to her, she will also insist on increased control by state authorities.

Yotova also commented on the need for political stabilization of the country. "It is needed to uphold our priorities through our institutions and structures, both public and private, as well as to uphold our principles outside the country and in Europe", said the president.
