Asen Vasilev, co-chairman of "Change", commented on these results on Facebook: "The regular government left Bulgaria with the lowest debt in the whole EU. Eurostat against the lies, the malice and envy."

"According to the latest Eurostat data, Bulgaria continues to be the country with the lowest public debt as a percentage of GDP in the entire European Union.
Key facts:
1. Bulgaria has the lowest debt in the EU – 22.6% of GDP, followed by Estonia (23.6%) and Luxembourg (27.2%).
2. In the first quarter of 2024, the country's debt decreased by 0.5 percentage points compared to the end of 2023.
3. Bulgaria is one of only seven countries in the EU that recorded a reduction in its debt during this period.
4. By comparison, the countries with the highest debt in the EU are Greece (159.8%), Italy (137.7%) and France (110.8%).

* 20 member states recorded an increase in their debt compared to the last quarter of 2023
* On an annual basis, Bulgaria's debt increases by a minimum of 0.5 percentage points, which is significantly less than the increase in many other countries.
* The average ratio of government debt to GDP in the euro area is 88.7%, and in the whole EU – 82%.
