Scholz's party wins the Brandenburg elections against Alternative for Germany - 1

The center-left German Social Democratic Party (GSDP) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz overtook the far-right Alternative for Germany /AzG/ on the provincial elections in Brandenburg, reported BGNES, quoted by NOVA.

GSPD received 32% of the votes against AzG with 29%, public television ZDF reported. An exit poll commissioned by ARD TV shows 31% for the GSDP and 30% for the right.

A victory for the far right in Brandenburg would mean another defeat for the Social Democrats, who have ruled the province since German reunification in 1990.

Government infighting has seen Scholz's approval ratings plummet, while his defense minister, Social Democrat Boris Pistorius, often tops polls as Germany's most popular politician.

Polling stations in Brandenburg closed at 18:00 local time (19:00 Bulgarian).
