The proposal for a referendum to postpone the euro on Europe Day is worrying, wrote the mayor of Sofia Vasil Terziev on Facebook. On the day when we celebrate the strength of unity and our belonging to the European family, such a move creates a risk of division and doubt, he points out.
Bulgaria is facing an important choice - not just geopolitical, but civilizational. It is time to talk not about whether, but how we will fully participate in the future of the European Union, notes the mayor of the capital.
In his words, the path to the euro is not symbolic, but a real commitment, confirmed by our membership and contractual obligations. The Constitutional Court has already made a clear statement - such a referendum would contradict the Basic Law and international law. Let us use today to confirm our direction and have a conversation about Bulgaria's leadership in Europe - with confidence, responsibility and a vision for the future, says Vasil Terziev.
Earlier, Head of State Rumen Radev stated in an address to the people and the National Assembly that he was submitting a proposal to the parliament to hold a national referendum on the euro.
„Do you agree that Bulgaria should adopt the single European currency, the euro, in 2026?“ is the question of the survey to the citizens proposed by the Head of State. According to him, the referendum will be a test of the democratic nature of the National Assembly and will show who follows the principles of democracy and who denies the right of Bulgarians to determine their future.
