Several ground floors of houses in the capital's "Modern Suburb" district are flooded due to heavy rains today. A team of ten people from the Sofia Municipality's emergency unit are working on site to control the situation.
The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) has announced a red code for significant rainfall in the districts of Blagoevgrad, Pazardzhik and Smolyan, where amounts of over 60 liters per square meter are expected. Later, Sofia region, Lovech and Gabrovo were added to them, bTV warned.
An orange code for heavy rainfall is in force for Sofia region, Vratsa, Kyustendil, Pleven, Lovech, Gabrovo, Plovdiv and Kardzhali, as well as for Sofia city and Pernik. Precipitation over 45 liters per square meter is expected for these areas.
A yellow code for more moderate rains of up to about 35 liters per square meter has been declared for Sofia city, Pernik, Ruse, Veliko Tarnovo, Stara Zagora and Haskovo.
A partial state of emergency has been declared in the Novozagorsko region due to hail in the villages of Byal Kladenets, Pet Mogili and Novoselets. No one was injured, but the damage to property and agricultural areas is serious.
The situation remains the most severe in Byal Kladenets, where yesterday evening at around 6:00 p.m. a strong storm with rain, wind and hailstones the size of grains larger than an egg caused trees to fall, broken car windows, damaged roofs and destroyed agricultural produce, bTV notes.
