Crimes, punishments and the fight against corruption - these were some of the topics that investigative journalist Slavi Angelov commented on in "From the Day".
He said that he was not surprised by the release of Desislava Ivancheva, because "they had been trying for a long time, but they were persistently refused".
"And in the end, she had 10 months left of this six-year sentence. Many people - murderers, rapists, people who kidnapped women, men and children - were released much earlier, so I am not bothered by the fact that she is being released now.
He stated that he was bothered by the period in which there were many initiatives in her defense, which were on the verge of "explaining that she was actually an innocent victim in some scheme and conspiracy by the prosecutor's office". He stated that he did not agree with this, because he remembers the investigation into her case. She was still convicted in three instances.
"I remember how this mayor of a large district in Sofia changed her meeting with architect Vaklin in several places. I remember that there was a lot of evidence. And yes, indeed, the bullshit that the prosecutor's office did when she arrested her was enormous, an absolutely unnecessary and ugly show. Because when you don't show with deeds that you are not getting a salary in vain, these types of operations come into play. It was terrible what happened to her on the spot, but I still think that she is guilty, considering this illness. She gave birth to a child, etc. I think it is quite normal that she was released 10 months before the end of the sentence".
According to Angelov, the Anti-Corruption Commission should really be closed for economic reasons, since in his words "it is harmful to the state budget".
"We recently released statistics on the work of this commission and it showed that they had taken away property worth about 3,000,000 leva, and at the same time lost cases with interest for over 30 million leva".
Why? Because the people who work there are incompetent, said Slavi Angelov. It should have been closed immediately after these statistics came out, he said. And not "after the arrest of the mayor in Varna".
"All the filth that we observe, he said, on the road, in the streets, in the bars, playing music, extremely aggressive behavior... Everything is terrible here. There are several reasons for this. And one of them is the lack of justice and retribution. Because these bad examples, these gangster examples that the younger generation is starting to like, come from the fact that they see that these heroes are not getting what they deserve. There is no retribution. There is no justice for them".
In his words, the only thing that has reduced serious accidents is Covid. What can stop us "under no circumstances should we buy icons, bags, badges, pens - this does not work". What does work, however, are the cameras, as well as the impossibility of not paying the fine. According to the latest data that the journalist remembers, the collection rate of fines is below 50%.
Paying fines should become inevitable and the slow administration of justice should speed up, said Slavi Angelov.
"Retribution in Bulgaria is not coming. Or it is very late and insufficient".
According to him, cases should not be postponed because of a lawyer. He also sees a problem with experts. In his words, our MPs have shown us over the years that they "cannot solve problems, including legislative ones".
Everyone expects faster justice, Slavi Angelov was categorical at the end of the conversation.
