The sea in August is traditionally dangerous due to the appearance of strong northeast winds. The waters on the Southern Black Sea Coast have been extremely stormy for days and have already claimed victims. Every day, lifeguards on guarded beaches have to help beachgoers trapped in the strong currents to get to shore.
The concessionaire of the "Kraimorie" beach, Nikolay Dimitrov, explained that the sea was calm on Saturday morning, but high waves are expected again later in the day, Nova TV reports.
“We have the task in the morning to check the bottom, see what the condition is and how to act in certain situations”, said Vasil Aleksiev, senior lifeguard and instructor at the Bulgarian Red Cross.
He added that the risks are mainly related to the surf. “After we check the bottom, we know where to direct children and people in disadvantaged situations”, he pointed out.
The lifeguard explained that one should be careful with unguarded beaches and appealed to beachgoers to check the seabed in order to avoid incidents. “Unfortunately, there is no way for us to know what is happening there and we cannot control people”, stressed Aleksiev.
