Georgi Semerdzhiev, who is serving a sentence for causing a serious accident that killed two young women on “Cherni Vrah“ Boulevard in the city of Sofia, has been transferred from the Sofia prison to the prison in the city of Bobov Dol. This was confirmed by the Ministry of Justice, quoted by the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency.

The decision to transfer was made after repeated cases in which prohibited items were found in Semerdzhiev's possession. According to the information provided by the department, he managed to obtain mobile phones, despite the strict regime and control in the prison.

The topic was raised publicly by the Minister of Justice Georgi Georgiev, who yesterday shared on his Facebook page curious details about various methods used to smuggle prohibited items into the prison system. “Three mobile phones in a melon, eight - in a stove, and one - in a tube of medicine - the ingenuity in attempts to bring prohibited items into prisons and prison dormitories knows no bounds”, the minister wrote.

The case with Semerdzhiev is another example of systematic breaches in the security of the penitentiary system, which occur despite periodic inspections and sanctions. According to officials from the system, the cases involving mobile phones are not isolated and highlight the need for stricter control and technical support for prisons in the country.

Georgi Semerdzhiev was convicted after driving a car under the influence of drugs and causing an accident in Sofia on July 5, 2022, in which two young women died. The case caused a serious public outcry and was among the most discussed court cases in 2023.

His transfer to Bobov Dol prison is seen as a disciplinary measure aimed at limiting his access to prohibited items and stricter enforcement of security rules.
