MII: The goal is to provide citizens with greater information about prices in retail chains - 1

The publication of a list of real-time prices will provide citizens with greater information and an opportunity for comparison between different retail chains. It is expected that this will contribute to greater competition and stabilization of prices of basic food products. This was said by Deputy Minister of Economy and Industry Doncho Barbalov during a meeting of the working group “Consumer Protection“ at the Coordination Council for Bulgaria's Preparation for Membership in the Eurozone.

The meeting was held in connection with the implementation of the requirement of the Law on the Introduction of the Euro in the Republic of Bulgaria (ZVERB), for food retailers to publish daily on their websites the prices of certain basic products from the large consumer basket. The meeting was attended by Maria Filipova, Chairperson of the Consumer Protection Commission, representatives of “Information Service“ AD, Bulgarian Pharmaceutical Union, “Association for Modern Trade“, Consumer Protection Associations (“Association for Legal Assistance to Consumers“ and “Consumer Federation“), National Statistical Institute, Ministry of Finance, Bulgarian National Bank, National Revenue Agency, etc.

According to the requirement of Art. 556, para. 4 of the Consumer Protection Act, the Consumer Protection Commission will maintain a special internet portal on which the daily selling prices of goods from the large consumer basket and the price lists provided by traders will be published in order to ensure transparency and protect the interests of consumers.

The meeting discussed the list of essential goods - basic types of bread, dairy products, meat, fruits and vegetables, canned goods, fish, medicines, etc.

The discussion outlined the possibilities for final clarifications to refine the list of goods from the large consumer basket and make decisions in support primarily of consumers, and according to the unanimous opinion of the participants, it was fruitful.

In conclusion, Deputy Minister Barbalov noted the need for joint work to build trust, both among citizens and among businesses. According to him, in this regard, more frequent meetings of the "Consumer Protection" working group are planned, which will provide an opportunity to share specific problems and search for solutions.
