The parliament rejected with 65 votes "for", 110 "against" and 28 "abstains" the draft resolution to hold a national referendum with the question "Do you agree that the Bulgarian lev will be the only official currency in the country until 2043?". After the vote, the deputies from "Vazrazhdane" left the plenary hall, BTA reports.
From "Vazrazhdane" we see no point in staying here any longer in this hall, which has occupied, appropriated democracy and is practically destroying the future of Bulgaria, said the party's chairman Kostadin Kostadinov after the vote from the parliamentary rostrum. Our place is among the people, "Vazrazhdane" is going there, he announced and then the party deputies left the plenary hall.
Kostadinov commented that less than a third of the people's representatives supported democracy in Bulgaria, and the rest have proven that there is a huge fear of the Bulgarian people. He noted that the vast majority of the Bulgarian people do not want Bulgaria to enter the eurozone, want the Bulgarian lev to be preserved and a referendum to be held on this issue, but, in his words, this is not allowed by "an oligarchic plutocratic stratum that has occupied power". This parliament is illegitimate and does not represent the Bulgarian people, but only the people who are inside it, the leader of "Vazrazhdane" also said.
During the vote, the draft resolution to hold a referendum on preserving the Bulgarian lev was supported by "Vazrazhdane", "There is such a people", "Moral, unity, honor" and "Majesty". From GERB-SDF, 52 deputies were against and six abstained. "We continue the change-Democratic Bulgaria" and "DPS-New beginning" voted against the proposal. From "BSP-United Left" two were against and 14 abstained. The parliamentary group of "Alliance for Rights and Freedoms" voted "abstained" .
The debate on the draft resolution to hold a referendum on preserving the Bulgarian lev began on the first Wednesday of July, but then the plenary time did not last long enough for it to be voted on. At the suggestion of "Majesty" today the discussion was resumed.
Tsoncho Ganev ("Vazrazhdane") commented that the majority in parliament continues to trample on the right of 604 thousand Bulgarian citizens, who signed the petition for a referendum, to be asked whether Bulgaria should enter the eurozone. Do not hide and do not be afraid of the Bulgarian people, because when you hide and are afraid of them, the "evening of the white bus" will inevitably come, the overthrow of the governments of Borisov and Oresharski will also inevitably come, he warned. It is not too late for Bulgarians to be asked about joining the eurozone, Ganev believes.
Stanislav Balabanov ("There are such people") said that they would support the submitted project to hold a referendum. Our support is related to the fact that it is important for people to be asked in principle, he specified. However, this topic related to the eurozone is over, commented Balabanov. He pointed out that there is no need to waste time on the topic of the euro, because from January 1, 2026, Bulgaria will enter the eurozone anyway.
