It is necessary to build a bridge over the Danube River in Silistra. This was stated to journalists in the Danube city by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications Grozdan Karadzhov. In addition to a second bridge in Ruse, that is, a third bridge over the Danube, there must be two more, one of which must be in Silistra, Karadzhov explained.
According to him, this bridge is a necessary crossing point to serve the "South - North" corridor, which continues through Romania, to Moldova and Ukraine. This corridor is a priority for the European Union (EU) and the rotation of traffic through Ruse, Giurgiu, Bucharest and from there through Constanta and to the north, for me is a transport paradox, the minister commented.
He expressed his readiness to hold talks with his Romanian counterpart at the European Commission (EC) level, in order to allow the construction of two more bridges by the Romanian state. This is not about funding or desire. We will provide both. The point is that there is no desire on the part of Romania and it represents a brake on the development of these Danube regions in Bulgaria, Karadjov pointed out.
If this does not change at the EC level and mechanisms are not found to stimulate the construction of our fourth bridge here in Silistra, I do not see any benefit in continuing to talk about the “South – North“ corridors, about gigantic plans to support the restoration of Ukraine. I think this will become a cornerstone for me as a minister, in terms of bridges, in general, of our Bulgaria-Romania transition, added Karadjov.
