Design plans, including renderings of the future 3,066-square-meter complex, were included in the preliminary agenda for an April meeting of the federal commission that reviews and approves construction on federal lands in Washington.
The checkpoint is proposed to be located under Sherman Park, located southeast of the White House and immediately south of the U.S. Treasury building.
For a long time, tourists and guests of the White House lined up here to get through security, then passed through a series of temporary pavilions and headed to the entrance to the East Wing. Last fall, President Donald Trump ordered the demolition of the East Wing to make way for the construction of the ballroom. Currently, visitors are screened in Lafayette Park, across from the White House.
The new checkpoint will be equipped with 7 security lines, which should speed up the processing of visitors and reduce wait times. According to plans, construction could begin as early as August. The White House expects the facility to be operational by July 2028 - about six months before the end of Trump's presidency.
The monument to General William Tecumseh Sherman, which stands in the center of the park of the same name, is not planned to be dismantled. The project is being implemented jointly by the Executive Office of the President, the US Secret Service and the National Park Service, which manages the White House grounds.
The proposal is scheduled to be discussed at a meeting on April 2 of the National Capital Planning Commission, which oversees federal development in Washington.
The agenda of the same meeting also includes a discussion and vote on plans to build a new building with an area of about 8,360 square meters, including a grand ballroom, on the site of the former East Wing.
