The world's largest solar plant will be built by China State Power Company and will be able to supply electricity a small country. The investment amounts to EUR 9.4 billion. It will be located in the Inner Mongolia region in the northern part of the country.
The facility will have a capacity of 8 gigawatts. This is over half of the UK's entire solar capacity and capable of powering nearly 6 million households.
The Chinese project will also include 4 gigawatts of wind power, 4 gigawatts of coal power, 200 megawatts of solar thermal power.
Construction of the plant is scheduled to begin in September this year and be completed in June 2027.
To date, China has installed the most solar capacity of any other country in the world – over 600 gigawatts by November 2023. Last year, the country commissioned as much capacity as all other countries in the world put together in 2022, according to data from the International Energy Agency.
