Tomorrow (December 12) marks exactly 40 years since the day Dimitar Penev first became the head coach of CSKA. This marks the beginning of one of the most remarkable football stories in the history of Bulgaria – the building of the great "army" team, which over the next 5 years became a terror for rivals in our country and in Europe and is still a benchmark for beautiful, effective and championship football.
On this occasion, the CSKA Foundation delighted all "red" fans and football aesthetes with a true collector's item – the book "The Glorious Army Squad", tracing in depth the rise and successes of this unrivaled team. The luxury edition covers the first period of the Strategist at the helm of CSKA – from 12.12.1985 to 26.08.1990. In it, the "army men", led by their deadly trident Stoichkov-Penev-Kostadinov, won 3 titles, 3 Bulgarian Cups, 3 Soviet Army Cups, 1 Super Cup, and in 1989 they embraced all four cups. Our team set a series of records, some unbeaten to this day. The march is also in Europe – semi-final for the KNK and quarter-final for the KESH.
The book has luxurious hard covers, and all pages are colorful and rich in unique photographs. There are complete statistics – all 204 CSKA matches during this period are available, backed up with scorers and lineups.
The foreword is by CSKA's sports director Boyko Velichkov, who in his youth was a contemporary of the great exploits of that glorious team.
The book offers author interviews with Dimitar Penev, Hristo Stoichkov, Lyuboslav Penev, Emil Kostadinov, Lachezar Tanev and Petar Vitanov, given especially for "The Glorious Army Squad". On the pages you will find a number of curious and hitherto unknown facts.
The end of the great team is unexpected and a bit sad – Dimitar Penev was removed in the summer of 1990 after a rebellion by three football players. However, one of them, years later, stands before the "The Glorious Army Squad" and reveals the truth. According to him, it is completely different...
