Ultra-fast charging of an electric vehicle leads to accelerated wear of the battery, which significantly reduces its service life. This conclusion was also reached by Asian experts from CarNewsChina, citing a study by Tsinghua University and the experience of drivers.
According to the researchers, frequent use of an ultra-fast charging station with a power of 120 kW or more reduces battery life by 40% compared to slow charging from a household outlet.
The analysis also showed that for taxis that travel more than 100 kilometers per day and use ultra-fast charging more than 70% of the time, the battery health can drop from 100% to 85% within a year.
Taxi drivers who frequently use super-fast charging, to save their working time, also confirm that this convenient feature actually accelerates the “aging“ of the battery.
According to the publication, manufacturers are now looking for ways to balance charging speed and battery durability. Improved thermal control systems, “intelligent“ charging stations, and management systems with “overcharge protection modes“ that adjust power depending on the battery condition are being created.
For their part, experts advise owners to limit ultra-fast charging to less than 40% of the total number of charging sessions, prioritizing slow charging when time allows. They also recommend avoiding ultra-fast charging when the battery level is below 10% or above 90%, as then charging can cause more damage.
