The Greek authorities reported a great success of the pilot program in Athens with 24-hour transport on Saturday, BNR reported.
Thousands of citizens traveled on the metro and city buses in Athens tonight, the transport ministry reported. Night transport in the Greek capital is being introduced for the first time, in order to reduce cases of driving after drinking alcohol.
Both the metro, city buses and trams worked tonight. Owners of nightclubs also expressed satisfaction, reporting an increase in customers.
At the same time, the police conducted a massive operation to check for driving under the influence of alcohol. High fines are being imposed under the new measures.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited several metro stations, thanking drivers for helping young people get home without incident. Deputy Transport Minister Konstantinos Kiranakis told the media that public transport in Athens will now operate at night every Saturday and Sunday.
