The UN Security Council may take another step towards reinstating sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

If the resolution to extend the sanctions relief period is not adopted, UN sanctions imposed between 2006 and 2010 will automatically be reinstated at the end of next week. That could happen if the extension fails to get the required nine votes in the 15-member council or if it is vetoed.

Diplomats expect the extension bill to be rejected.

Germany, Britain and France triggered the mechanism for quickly reinstating sanctions in late August, citing Iran's significant violations of the 2015 nuclear deal, including enriching uranium beyond levels needed for civilian use.

Even if the resolution is rejected, the three countries that sponsored it will have until the end of next week to negotiate concessions with Iran that could prevent the sanctions from coming into effect.

Diplomats, however, see such an outcome as unlikely at this time. About 150 world leaders will gather in New York on Tuesday for the UN General Assembly.
