Deadly explosion and bomb threat in Munich: Oktoberfest closed for several hours - 1

The Oktoberfest beer festival in Munich will reopen at 5:30 p.m. local time (6:30 p.m. Bulgarian time) after being closed for several hours due to a bomb threat, the city's mayor Dieter Reiter announced, quoted by DPA, BTA reports.

Earlier today, German police found explosives in the backpack of a suspect in the bomb threat against the festival and announced that the man was found dead.

Investigators suspect that the incident was arson, related to a family dispute. According to information from the newspaper “Welt“, it is a 57-year-old German man who placed explosive devices in his home, then set them on fire and committed suicide. So far, the authorities have not confirmed his identity.

Two women were injured in the fire and explosion - the suspect's 21-year-old daughter and 81-year-old mother, who were taken to hospital. One person remains missing.

The incident took place in an apartment building in the Munich district “Lerchenau“, where there were explosions and a fire. Several explosive devices were found in the burning apartment, including hand grenades with trigger cables, which are currently being defused by experts.

The police found a letter from the suspect containing “an unspecified bomb threat related to Oktoberfest“. Around 9:30 a.m. local time, police began searching the Theresienwiese square.

Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter stressed that it was a "confirmed bomb threat."
