Early Sunday morning, unknown individuals set fire to the headquarters of the Christian Social Union (CSU), a member of Germany's ruling coalition, in Munich, Munich police said.

Witnesses reported the fire to law enforcement at around 2:30 a.m. (3:30 a.m. Bulgarian time) on October 5.

“Passersby managed to put out the fire with a fire extinguisher“, police said.

They added that no suspects had been detained and an investigation into the arson had been launched. No one was injured in the fire, but the building suffered property damage worth several thousand euros, police added.

It was previously reported that the ruling coalition of the CDU/CSU and SPD parties in Germany has recorded a record low of support since it came to power - just 38%. The support level for the CDU/CSU is currently 24%, which is one percentage point less than the previous week and is the conservatives' worst result in six months.

It was previously reported that a majority of Germans are dissatisfied with Merz after 100 days in office.
