Germany seeks enhanced cooperation with Gulf states to ensure maritime security - 1

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful announced that his main goal is to deepen cooperation with key Gulf states to ensure the security of sea routes and counter Iran's destabilizing policy, DPA reported.

On the sidelines of consultations between EU foreign ministers and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) taking place in Kuwait, Wadeful emphasized that the Houthis - recognized as a terrorist organization - threaten not only Israel, but also the free movement of goods in the Red Sea. This affects both the Gulf countries and Europe, he added.

The minister called for concrete actions to eliminate the threat from the Houthis. During the discussion with representatives of the GCC on Sunday evening, he stated that there is a common understanding of the need not only to respond to the symptoms, but also to eliminate the root causes of the conflict. According to him, they are hiding in Iran, which is using the Houthis to destabilize the region.

“The coincidence of interests with many countries in the region means that developing joint political approaches is now crucial“, said Wadeful.

Today, the German Foreign Minister met with his Kuwaiti counterpart, Abdullah Ali Al Yahya.

The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), founded in 1981, includes the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, and aims to cooperate in the field of foreign policy and security.

At the first summit of EU and GCC leaders in 2024 in Brussels, it was decided to deepen cooperation. Kuwait currently holds the GCC presidency.
