China is ready for new trade talks with the US "as soon as possible", the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported today, quoted by BTA.
This information appeared in the media space amid attempts by Beijing and Washington to avoid a new escalation of tariffs.
The information was reported after a video conference call between Chinese Vice Premier and chief trade negotiator He Lifen and US Treasury Secretary Scott Besant.
Xinhua described the conversation as frank, in-depth and constructive.
US President Donald Trump said yesterday that the 100 percent tariffs on imports of goods from China introduced by his administration could not be applied for a long time, as they would have serious economic consequences. This was reported by Reuters, citing an interview with Trump on the Fox Business Network.
"They are not sustainable, but that is the level (of the imposed rates)", Trump said in response to a question about how the tariffs would affect the US economy. He added that "they (China) forced me to do it", blaming Beijing for the stalemate in trade talks between the two countries.
Last week, Trump announced that Washington would increase to 100 percent the amount of customs duties on China and introduce export control measures on technology products - nine days before the expiration of the currently existing tariff relief.
