The Canadian government remains committed to continuing trade negotiations with the United States. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney told reporters after the APEC summit in Gyeongju, South Korea. "We are ready to negotiate a trade agreement with the United States that will be even more beneficial for both sides," the prime minister said. He added that Ottawa was ready to offer Washington "the best possible trade deal." Carney also announced that during a private dinner on the sidelines of the APEC summit, he had apologized to US President Donald Trump for a Canadian anti-tariff ad that aired in the United States. Trump had earlier said that Washington did not plan to resume trade talks with Ottawa because the United States aired an ad sponsored by Canadian officials criticizing import tariffs. As previously reported, Ontario, the main an industrial region of Canada, launched an advertising campaign on American television aimed at repealing Trump's tariffs. This included airing clips in American media of excerpts from a speech by the 40th President of the United States, Ronald Reagan, criticizing the tariffs and defending the principles of free trade.
