Iran asks UN to hold US accountable - 1

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has called on the United Nations (UN) to impose "appropriate measures" against the United States and Israel over the June military strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

Araghchi said President Donald Trump and other US officials bear "criminal responsibility" for the strikes. for the strikes, after Trump said last week that he had directed Israel's initial attack on Iran on June 13.

In a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and the UN Security Council on Wednesday, Araghchi said Israel and the United States should be forced to pay reparations, including compensation for damages caused to Iran.

Speakers at the US mission to the UN and Guterres' office did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

On November 6, Trump told reporters that he had “largely directed” Israel's initial strike on Iran.

Araghchi said Trump's comment was clear evidence of U.S. influence during Iran's 12-day air war with Israel, in which Iranian state media said more than 900 people, including Iranian military personnel, were killed.

“This does not cancel or limit the possibility of individual criminal responsibility for all those individuals, including those within the Israeli regime, who participated in commanding, ordering, committing, or aiding, abetting, and otherwise facilitating the commission of war crimes,“ Araghchi said.

The call for U.N. action contrasts with recent calls by U.S. and Iranian leaders to resolve their decades-long conflict.

Iran said earlier this week it wanted to reach a deal with the United States on its nuclear program, which it says is peaceful purposes.

Trump said last month that the United States was ready to make a deal with Iran when Tehran was ready to do so, adding that “the hand of friendship and cooperation has been extended“.
