French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz have expressed serious doubts about the efforts of the United States and its emissaries to negotiate peace between Ukraine and Russia, the German magazine "Spiegel" reported, quoted by Reuters, which cited a transcript of a confidential phone conversation, BTA reported.
"Spiegel" indicated today that the French president warned Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and other European leaders during a phone call on Monday that the US could turn its back on Ukraine regarding territorial concessions and security guarantees.
"There is a possibility that the US could betray Ukraine on issues of territorial integrity without any clarity on security guarantees", Macron said in a statement, quoted by "Spiegel".
Merz warned Zelensky during a phone call on Monday that US representatives in the negotiations "are "playing games", and that the Ukrainian president should "be very careful" in the next few days.
The German chancellor's office declined to comment on the remarks, while the French president's office did not respond to a request for comment.
European leaders expressed support for Zelensky on Monday after talks between the United States and Ukraine to revise the peace plan for Ukraine, which was initially favorable to Russia.
