Saakashvili: Georgia should not count on being saved by the West - 1

Active protests in Georgia are crucial for the future of the country, former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili wrote on social media, quoted by the Georgian public media GPB, BTA reported.

"It is encouraging that we have started to massively report abuses to international organizations. This, in itself, has a certain deterrent effect on the commission of new violations, but the response may take years," wrote Saakashvili, who is serving a prison sentence.

The most important thing is to remain active and organize mass protests, instead of waiting for other countries to take action, he said. "They will wait for the results of these fictitious investigations and only then will they assess the situation and decide how to react. If we step up our efforts here in the meantime, external support will come faster," he added.

"We should not be complacent, believing that the West will save us. If support is delayed, we risk falling into despair. We must act now, and then help will follow," Saakashvili concluded.
