French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday that unity between Europe and the United States was key to supporting Ukraine, insisting that "there is no mistrust" and rejecting media reports that he had said there was a risk that Washington would betray Ukraine, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
“Unity between Americans and Europeans on the Ukrainian issue is vital. And I keep saying that we must work together“, Macron told reporters during his visit to China.
“We welcome and support the US peace efforts. The US needs Europeans to lead these peace efforts“, he added.
The German magazine “Spiegel“ yesterday quoted a transcript of a confidential conversation according to which the French president and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed serious skepticism about the efforts of the US government and its envoys to negotiate a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia.
“I deny everything“, Macron said in response to a question about the “Spiegel“ material. “We need the US for peace. The US needs us for this peace to be lasting and stable. So there is no scenario in which a lasting peace in Ukraine can be concluded without the joint efforts of the Europeans, the Americans, the Canadians, the Australians and the Japanese“, he added.“
