155,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine, BBC reports - 1

An investigation by the Russian service of the BBC (BBC) and the Russian opposition media outlet "Mediazona" has confirmed the deaths of over 155,000 Russian servicemen in Ukraine.

The report is based on data from open sources, BTA reported.

The authors of the investigation have confirmed the deaths of 155,368 Russian servicemen - 50,438 volunteers, 27,578 professional soldiers, 19,276 prisoners, 16,164 mobilized soldiers and 2,834 fighters of private military companies. Journalists have not been able to determine exactly who the 39,078 killed were.

In the last two weeks alone - between November 28 and December 12, 2025 - another 3,226 names have been added to the blacklist. This has happened against the backdrop of fierce fighting in eastern Ukraine, including for the cities of Pokrovsk and Kupyansk.

Since the beginning of the war, 6,205 Russian officers have been confirmed dead, including 450 lieutenant colonels, 125 colonels and 12 generals. By region, the largest number of Russian soldiers killed came from the republics of Bashkortostan and Tatarstan. This can be partly explained by the high activity of local groups collecting data, the BBC notes.

According to the authors of the project, the real number of Russian servicemen killed since the beginning of the war nearly 4 years ago could be between 239,000 and 345,260.

So far, there has been no comment from the Russian authorities. In general, both sides in the conflict rarely provide data on the victims they have suffered.
