Ukrainian underwater drones "Sub Sea Baby" for the first time in history hit a Russian submarine of project 636.3 "Varshavyanka" during an operation at the port of Novorossiysk, Ukrinform reported, citing the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), BTA writes.
This submarine is listed in NATO codification as the "Kilo" class.
"On board the submarine were four launchers for "Kalibur" cruise missiles, which the enemy uses to strike Ukrainian territory," the SBU statement said.
The operation was attended by the 13th Main Directorate for Military Counterintelligence of the SBU and the Ukrainian Navy.
"The cost of a "Varshavyanka" class submarine is about $400 million. Given the current international sanctions, the construction of such a submarine could cost up to $500 million. This class of submarines is also known as the "Black Hole" due to the ability of its hull to absorb sound and remain largely undetectable," the SBU wrote.
The Ukrainian intelligence service notes that the Russian Navy was forced to deploy the submarine to the port of Novorossiysk due to successful operations with "Sea Baby" surface drones, which drove Russian ships and submarines from the Sevastopol Bay.
