US President Donald Trump said on Saturday that he would impose a 100 percent tariff on Canadian goods if Canada concludes a trade agreement with China, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

In a post on the social network “Truth Social“, Trump warned Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that such a deal would pose a serious risk to his country. “China will swallow Canada and completely destroy it — including its business, social structure and way of life“, the US president wrote.

Trump added that if Canada signs a trade agreement with China, “a 100 percent tariff will be immediately imposed on all Canadian goods and products entering the United States“.

During a recent visit to China, Carney described the Asian country as a “reliable and predictable partner“, and at the World Economic Forum in Davos he urged European leaders to seek investment from the world's second-largest economy.

The US president expressed concerns that Beijing could use Canada as a transit zone to circumvent US tariffs. “If Governor Carney thinks he will turn Canada into a “port“ "He is wrong about China, where to export goods to the US," Trump wrote.

Tensions between the US and Canada have increased in recent days. On Thursday, Trump withdrew an invitation for Canada to join the "Peace Council" initiative, which Bulgaria has joined, aimed at resolving global conflicts. The move followed Carney's remarks in Davos in which he criticized major countries that use economic integration and tariffs as a tool for political pressure.
