Iran and the US will negotiate in Geneva - 1

Delegations of high-ranking diplomats from Iran and the US will negotiate today about the Iranian nuclear program in Geneva with the mediation of Oman, the agencies reported, BTA reported.

The two delegations will be headed by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US special envoy Steve Witkoff. The talks between them will be held indirectly at the Omani Embassy in Geneva.

The discussions will take place in the context of strained relations between Washington and Tehran after Iranian security forces brutally suppressed a wave of protests last month, killing thousands of people.

In response, US President Donald Trump threatened the Islamic Republic with military intervention and sent an aircraft carrier to the Middle East.

The first round of talks to reduce tensions between the two countries took place in the Omani capital Muscat earlier this month.

The main topic of the upcoming dialogue in Geneva will be Iran's controversial nuclear program.

Washington has been trying for years to prevent the Iranian government from acquiring a nuclear bomb. For its part, Tehran has said it is willing to discuss restrictions on its nuclear program if the United States is willing to lift severe economic sanctions.

However, Iran has indicated that it is not ready to negotiate on other issues, such as limiting its missile arsenal or ending support for armed groups.
