US President Donald Trump has ordered a floating hospital to be sent to Greenland to “treat the locals“.
“We are sending a large hospital ship to Greenland to treat the sick who cannot be treated there“, the American leader wrote on TruthSocial.
According to Trump, this initiative was carried out jointly with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry.
The president added that the ship “is already on its way“.
In January, speaking at the Davos forum, Trump announced his intention to immediately begin negotiations for the acquisition of Greenland, noting that he does not use and will not use force. He also said the United States was foolish to "give" it to Denmark after World War II.
In the event of a potential war, "missiles will fly over Greenland," Trump warned. But the United States cannot defend the island by simply renting it.
After meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump announced the creation of the foundations for a future deal for Greenland. He added that he would not impose a 10% tariff on several European countries that was due to take effect in February.
As Axios reports, the draft agreement does not involve transferring sovereignty over the island to the United States. Instead, it proposes the deployment of the "Golden Dome" missile defense system on the island, as well as an update to the 1951 defense agreement between Washington and Copenhagen.
Washington's position has drawn sharp criticism in Greenland itself, where the authorities and the majority of residents oppose joining the United States. The initiative has also failed to gain support in Europe.
