Storm paralyzes US air traffic - 1

A powerful storm in the northeastern part of the United States paralyzed air transport and travel, with 8,000 flights canceled and others delayed, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

The storm also caused snowfall in the northeastern part of the United States, which closed roads and canceled classes.

About 7% of all flights are expected to be canceled today, compared to yesterday, when 19% were canceled.

US airlines will try to organize more flights despite bad weather conditions, Reuters notes.

The airline company "Southwest Airlines" said it would increase its flights starting tomorrow if "weather conditions allow it to do so safely". The Dallas, Texas-based company had to cancel 7% of its flights yesterday, a smaller percentage than its rivals.

Jet Blue was the worst-hit airline, canceling 80% of its flights yesterday, according to data from the air traffic tracking site "FlightAware". Jet Blue said it had to cancel a total of 1,600 flights so far.

Amtrak also canceled dozens of trains on the Boston-New York line and other routes in the northeast.

Authorities in several states have ordered drivers to refrain from non-essential travel for an extended period of time due to heavy snowfall.
