Greece is preparing for a possible migrant flow due to the crisis in the Middle East, the online edition of the newspaper "Kathimerini" reports, BTA reported.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed his concerns that the events in the region create a risk of a new flow of migrants. According to him, the military conflict should not lead to a refugee crisis similar to the one in 2015.
From Brussels, where he is participating in a summit of the European Council, Mitsotakis called on European partners to send a clear message regarding the protection of the EU's external borders, which are also external borders for Greece.
The Greek authorities are already preparing for a possible increase in the migrant flow. Thirty percent of the capacity of the existing reception infrastructure on the islands is free to take in new migrants.
The coast guard has been put on alert as part of an operational plan to protect the sea borders. A possible suspension of asylum applications is also being considered.
The flow of migrants to Greece has decreased compared to last year, according to data cited by "Kathimerini". From January to March 18, 2026, 4,010 illegal migrants entered the country. During the same period last year, their number was 7,252.
A 62 percent drop in illegal migrants was recorded on the land border between Greece and Turkey. Turkey also announced increased security measures on the border with Iran.
