A border crossing connecting Iraq with Iran has been targeted by an airstrike, with Iran's state-run Tasnim news agency reporting that one Iraqi civilian was killed in the attack.

The head of Iraq's border ports, Omar al-Waeli, announced the suspension of commercial and passenger traffic through the Shalamcheh border crossing as a result of the airstrike.

The decision, he said, was taken after an Iranian airstrike that left one Iraqi citizen dead and five others wounded near the Iraqi border crossing.

Videos shared on social media from the scene of the crossing show a plume of black smoke and damage caused to inside the building, with debris scattered around.

A vital transit point: The Shalamcheh border crossing is typically used by Iraqi and Iranian travelers to depart and arrive by land, especially during holiday seasons and periods of religious pilgrimage.

During the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s, the border crossing became one of the main front lines of the war. Iraqi forces used it as a key invasion route early in the conflict, and the area witnessed some of the heaviest and deadliest fighting of that conflict.
