Lebanese President Joseph Aoun today stressed the importance of a ceasefire with Israel before direct talks with the Jewish state, which he did not confirm, Agence France-Presse reported, BTA reported.
The agency notes that this happened after US President Donald Trump announced that a meeting between the leaders of the two countries would take place today.
"The ceasefire that Lebanon wants with Israel is the natural initial stage of direct talks between the two countries," Aoun said in a statement.
The US president announced last night that the "leaders" of Israel and Lebanon would hold a conversation today, which would set a precedent, and an Israeli minister said that Netanyahu "will talk" with Aoun.
Meanwhile, one person was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a car on the main road linking Beirut to Damascus today, Lebanon's official news agency NNA reported.
The strike was carried out in the Dahr al-Baydar area, in the mountains east of the capital Beirut, far from the border with Israel, the NNA said.
