Magyar calls on Orban to extend his decision to cap gasoline and diesel prices for Hungarians until May 30 - 1

The new Hungarian government will maintain the restrictions on gasoline and diesel prices imposed by Viktor Orban, said the leader of “Tisza“ Peter Magyar after a meeting with Zsolt Hernády, head of the oil and gas company MOL.

“MOL confirmed that continuous fuel supplies to our country are guaranteed, despite the unstable situation on the world market. "We have agreed that the price cap on both diesel and petrol will remain in force after the new government is formed and this will not create an additional burden on the Hungarian budget," Madzhar wrote on Facebook.

He called on Orbán to extend the decree adopted by the outgoing government to reduce excise duties on fuels until May 30. It expires on April 30.

On March 10, the Hungarian government set a price cap on petrol and diesel. According to this decision, the price of 95-octane petrol at gas stations was set at 595 forints (1.51 euros) and that of diesel fuel at 615 forints (1.56 euros).

Only drivers with Hungarian license plates and registration documents can purchase these fuels at the reduced prices. This right is granted to private individuals, as well as to farmers, shippers and entrepreneurs. The European Commission considers this an anti-market measure and discrimination against citizens of other countries, so the new Hungarian government may also have disagreements with Brussels on this issue.

On April 12, Orbán's party suffered a heavy defeat in the parliamentary elections in the “Tisza“ constituency. Magyar is expected to be elected prime minister at the first session of the new parliament, which will be held on May 6 or 7.
