The opposition in Chad disputes the results of the presidential vote - 1

The main opposition party in Chad claims that there were irregularities in last year's presidential election week, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

In the elections, the interim president and head of the military junta that has ruled the country for the past three years, General Mahamat Idris Debi Itno, secured 61 percent of the votes cast in the first election after three years of military rule.

Opposition leader Syukse Masra, who received 18.5 percent and came in second, said access to polling stations and the vote-counting process was restricted, election materials were missing and soldiers were carrying ballot boxes.

The election results must now be considered by Chad's Constitutional Council.

Debi Itno seized power at the head of a group of generals in 2021 after the death of his father in military action in northern Chad and overturned the constitution. His father, Idriss Deby, ruled the country of about 19 million people for more than 30 years.
