The Kremlin today condemned the attack on Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, who was shot yesterday, and wished him a speedy recovery, Reuters reported, BTA reported .
"We condemn the attack in the strongest terms. We find it completely unacceptable - it is truly a great tragedy. We hope that Fizo will overcome the situation and that he will recover as soon as possible. We wish him a speedy recovery," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told Izvestia.
While preparing for his visit to China, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an unusual move by sending a telegram to Slovakian President Zuzana Czaputova regarding the attack on Fico, Reuters notes.
"I was outraged when I learned about the attempted assassination of the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico. There can be no excuse for this monstrous crime. Robert Fizzo is a brave man with a stand of his own. I hope that these qualities will help him survive this difficult situation," Putin's telegram said.
Robert Fico was shot in the town of Handlova, which is located in central Slovakia. Slovak media reported that the shooter was a 71-year-old man. The attack on Fico shocked Slovakia and was condemned by the international community.
