The European Union has called on Georgia to quickly and transparently investigate alleged irregularities during in the elections on Saturday in order to restore confidence in the electoral process, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
"The EU recalls that any legislation that undermines the fundamental rights and freedoms of Georgian citizens and contradicts the values and principles on which the EU is founded must be repealed," the European Commission said in a joint statement with the head of the foreign EU policy Josep Borrell.
"After the parliamentary elections in Georgia, I intend to include Georgia in the agenda of the informal meeting of the European Council in Budapest,", European Council President Charles Michel wrote in a publication in "X".
"We call on the Central Electoral Commission and other competent authorities to fulfill their duty to quickly, transparently and independently investigate and rule on election violations and allegations about them,", he added.
"These alleged irregularities must be seriously clarified and addressed,", Michel also stated.
The Georgian Electoral Commission declared the ruling party "Georgian Dream" for the winner of the elections against the background of numerous evidence of violations, DPA points out. The defeated opposition plans to protest, and the country's president rejected the result.
"We reiterate the EU's call on the Georgian leadership to demonstrate its firm commitment to the country's path to the EU, also in line with the June and October European Council conclusions,'' Michel wrote.
Georgia is a candidate for joining the EU, but Brussels has frozen its candidacy because the "Georgian dream" passed several repressive laws this year.
