Sources close to Donald Trump have revealed what his plans are to stop the war in Ukraine, reported The Wall Street Journal. According to his plan, a demilitarized zone similar to the one between North and South Korea will be created in Ukraine.
„The Peace Plan” Trump's plan to end the war in Ukraine could include a requirement to renounce NATO membership for 20 years and freeze the front lines without returning territories.
The Republican, who yesterday won the US presidential election, promised, if elected, to end the war in Ukraine “in 24 hours”. According to sources, Trump still does not know how to convince Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky to sit down at the negotiating table.
One of the Trump team's ideas is for Kiev to promise not to join NATO for at least 20 years. In return, the US will continue to supply Ukraine with weapons to deter a future Russian attack.
Also, under this plan, the front line would be frozen and both sides would agree to a demilitarized zone. It is unclear who will control the territory, but the peacekeeping force will not include US troops.
A member of the Trump team said that the US will not send US troops to Ukraine. “This is the work of the Poles, the Germans, the British and the French,”, he said.
Any attempt to start peace talks between Ukraine and Russia, let alone reach an agreement, will face many obstacles, notes the WSJ. First, Ukraine and Russia still have very different military goals and are not seeking to change them. The Kremlin shows little willingness to negotiate and demonstrates a willingness to escalate the conflict.
At the same time, Zelensky, whose country is heavily dependent on the United States for military and financial aid, may be more easily forced into negotiations, the WSJ notes, but he will have to face a society that will watch of ceding territory as capitulation to Moscow.
