NATO chief: I am deeply concerned about security in Europe - 1

I am deeply concerned about the security situation in Europe, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte told MEPs from the Foreign Affairs and Security and Defense Committees in the European Parliament in Brussels today, BTA reports.

Rutte called on MEPs to support the necessary increase in defense budgets of EU countries. According to him, the target of defense spending equal to two percent of GDP, adopted more than 10 years ago, is no longer sufficient. According to him, a significant increase is needed, as Rutte had previously indicated that it would be good to double the target.

The Secretary General indicated that these additional funds could be provided with new taxes, but also by reviewing some budget expenditures, including in the social sphere. According to him, today is the time for EU countries to increase their efforts, including in the field of military production, because in five years the conditions could deteriorate further. Involving allies from non-EU countries in the efforts of European defense production is vital for Europe's security, Rutte said.

We all want the war in Ukraine to end, for there to be lasting peace. I don't know when this war will end, but I know that peace will not be lasting if (Russian President Vladimir) Putin succeeds in Ukraine, he added. According to him, there will be no lasting peace if, after the war ends, Moscow, Pyongyang, Beijing and Tehran remain satisfied and feel that they are stronger. Peace will be lasting if Ukraine enters negotiations from a strong position, which is why it needs our support, Rutte added. My main task is to improve defense and military production in order to prevent war, the Secretary-General summarized.
