We can say that Serbia is in an undeclared state of emergency, said Tonino Picula, the rapporteur for the country in the European Parliament, in a comment on the ongoing protests, to the Croatian TV Nova, quoted by the regional TV En 1.
“The death of the 16th victim from (the collapse of the station canopy in) Novi Sad, in my opinion, once again raises the questions that provoked the mass protests in Serbia, namely the responsibility of those who caused the tragedy. Of course, all roads lead to the door of the government, which has clearly failed to respond positively to the demands of all those protesting in the streets and squares of Serbia in recent months,“ said Picula.
He said that the Serbian top leadership, and especially President Aleksandar Vucic, should point out the specific culprits for the situation in the country, while they often “try to shift society's focus to external enemies“.
Picula warned that Croatia should be careful with its neighboring countries to the east and southeast (Serbia and Bosnia – ed.), which are going through turbulent times.
