The attack on the city of Sumy was carried out with two "Iskander-M" missiles, the Russian Defense Ministry reported. On Sunday, the Ukrainian military reported that two "Iskander-M" missiles were fired at Sumy.
The Russian Defense Ministry named the meeting place of the command staff of the operational-tactical group of the Armed Forces of Ukraine as the target of the strike. The ministry says that more than 60 Ukrainian soldiers were killed. The BBC cannot confirm this claim.
The statement stressed that the strike was carried out "in conditions of active counteraction by the Ukrainian armed forces using foreign-made electronic warfare and air defense systems."
The attack killed 34 people, including two children, and injured more than 100 civilians, Ukrainian authorities said.
Ukraine has not confirmed claims by Russian pro-war bloggers that the attack in Sumy was directed against servicemen. Unofficial Ukrainian sources have reported that a military drill may have been taking place in the city.
