Russian President Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, during which the heads of state discussed the results of the direct talks between the Russian Federation and Ukraine in Istanbul.
“An exchange of views was also held on the results of the direct Russian-Ukrainian talks held in Istanbul“, the message published on the Kremlin website said.
On Friday, the first direct talks between Russia and Ukraine since 2022 began at 1:35 p.m. local time (coincides with Moscow time) and lasted about 1 hour and 50 minutes. This was preceded by a trilateral meeting between Turkey, the United States and Ukraine and contacts between the head of the Russian delegation, the assistant to the Russian President Vladimir Medinsky, and the American side.
After the negotiations, Medinsky reported that the Russian side was satisfied with their results and was ready to continue the contacts. According to him, the parties had agreed to exchange prisoners according to the formula “1000 for 1000“. Medinsky also reported that the Ukrainian side had requested direct negotiations between the leaders of the countries and Russia had taken “this request into account“. He noted that Moscow and Kiev would present their vision of a possible future ceasefire and each party would “describe this in detail“. The head of the Russian delegation added that the parties then intended to continue the negotiation process.
During the phone conversation, Putin and Tokayev also expressed satisfaction with the high level of relations achieved between the countries.
“The leaders discussed some current issues on the bilateral agenda, expressing satisfaction with the high level of Russian-Kazakh strategic partnership and alliance achieved,“ the statement said.
Tokayev noted that the events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the Victory in Moscow took place in a festive atmosphere and caused a wide positive response in many countries around the world.
During the phone conversation, the Russian president once again warmly congratulated the leader of Kazakhstan. Tokayev celebrates his birthday on May 17, he turns 72.
