Around 4:20 a.m. on Sunday, a man attacked guests standing in front of the Cutie bar on Große-Kurfürst-Strasse.
“According to current information, at least five people have been injured, three of them seriously. The possibility of more people being injured cannot be ruled out,” said police spokeswoman Sonja Remmert. Two of the injured are in life-threatening condition, reports the German newspaper Bild. They are between the ages of 23 and 27.
According to witnesses, the perpetrator stabbed his victims indiscriminately with a knife. Images from the crime scene show forensic experts securing such a weapon – a cane from which a blade can be removed.
The perpetrator had weapons and flammable liquid in his backpack. Some of the guests caught him and hit him. The attacker, however, managed to escape, losing his backpack while fleeing the scene of the crime. In it, the police found more weapons and a bottle of flammable liquid, as well as a residence permit issued to a Syrian citizen.
The police are of the opinion that the perpetrator, who is currently being sought, did not act spontaneously, but that the attack was well planned.
„The Bielefeld police identified knives at the crime scene. It cannot be ruled out that the suspect is armed," investigators added.
