Negotiations between Washington and Tehran on the controversial Iranian nuclear program are expected to enter a decisive phase at today's meeting in Rome, DPA reported, BTA reported.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are scheduled to arrive in the Italian capital for the fifth round of talks, which are being held with the mediation of Oman.
The US insists that the Iranian government completely stop enriching uranium. Washington considers this a necessary measure to permanently prevent the development of nuclear weapons. Tehran rejects this demand, but has demonstrated readiness to again limit its nuclear program and allow the exercise of stricter controls.
Both sides expressed optimism at the beginning of the talks. However, significant differences on the core issue of uranium enrichment emerged after a recent meeting in the Omani capital, Muscat. Experts say the talks are now at a critical stage.
