Germans now have more trust in the new government than in 2021, according to a survey cited by DPA, BTA reported.
According to the survey, which was conducted by the Hamburg-based "Opaschowski" Institute for Forecasting the Future, 56% of respondents said they had high hopes for the government of conservative Chancellor Friedrich Merz of the Christian Democratic Union.
For comparison, at the beginning of the government of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz, 52% of those who took part in a similar survey expressed similar expectations. There are regional differences. In eastern Germany, for example, only 50% of respondents said they had high hopes for the new government. However, there is an increase of 11 percentage points compared to 2021.
The current new government has greater support among older people than in 2021. Now 60% of people over 50 have hopes for the new government, while in 2021 they were 53%.
A different picture is observed among young respondents. The new government now enjoys the support of 50% of respondents aged 14 to 29, while at the beginning of its mandate, the Scholz government had the support of 57%. The survey was conducted from May 12 to 18, and 1,000 people were surveyed.
