The referendum in Italy, in which citizens voted on several different issues - including labor legislation and easing the requirements for Italian citizenship, has failed, BNR reported.
The reason is the low voter turnout of about 30%.
The poll, with a total of 5 questions - four on labor issues and one on obtaining Italian citizenship by adult non-EU foreigners permanently residing in Italy, did not receive the required overall approval of 50% + 1 voters due to the low voter turnout. According to official figures from the Interior Ministry, however, each individual question on labor issues was supported by over 80% of voters, and that on Italian citizenship by over 65%.
According to observers, this result is indicative, although the referendum as a whole was a failure. The leader of the Democratic Party, Eli Schlein, thanked the over 14 million voters. For the ruling party, the final result is also indicative, and they consider it a failure for the opposition.
