A helicopter carrying American tourists crashed into the sea immediately after takeoff in the southern suburb of Athens, Vouliagmeni, Greek public broadcaster ERTnews reported.
“A private helicopter took off from Elefsina Airport at 12:30 to pick up two American tourists from Vouliagmeni and continue to the island of Mykonos. However, before it could gain altitude, it crashed seconds after takeoff. On the pilot's instructions, the passengers exited the helicopter on their own,“ the television channel reported.
All five people on board are safe. Four Americans refused to be examined and were not injured.
A coast guard diver has recovered the passengers' personal belongings. The helicopter will be recovered within two days. A conclusion will then be made about the causes of the incident.
Preliminarily, the incident may have occurred either due to wind or due to mechanical failure.
