Israel said Iran had attempted to attack Israeli citizens in Cyprus, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar accused the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of attempting to attack Israeli citizens in Cyprus. In a post on “Ex“ Israel's top diplomat said the attack was thwarted thanks to Cypriot security services in cooperation with Israeli security services.
Saar did not provide further details about the nature of the attack. Earlier today, Cypriot police announced that they had arrested a man suspected of espionage and terrorism in Cyprus, and local media attributed links to Iran to him, Agence France-Presse reported.
The police did not provide any details about the arrests, arguing that it was a matter related to national security. The detainee appeared in a closed court in Limassol, where he was ordered to remain in pre-trial detention for eight days on charges of crimes related, among others, to terrorism and espionage, Agence France-Presse added, citing a police statement.
According to Cypriot media, the man was of Azerbaijani origin and was noticed for his suspicious behavior near the British air base in Akrotiri, near Limassol, in southern Cyprus. Foreign intelligence contributed to the man's arrest.
High-quality cameras, computers, telephoto lenses, notes and three mobile phones were found in his possession. Two people linked to the arrest were also detained in Britain, Cypriot media reported. Cyprus is a stopover for Israeli citizens trying to return home by air or sea after being stranded abroad due to the war between Israel and Iran.
Yemen's Houthi rebels will attack US ships in the Red Sea if Washington joins Israel's strikes on Iran, a spokesman for the group said on Monday. The US and the Houthis reached a ceasefire agreement in May, under which neither side would attack the other. The Houthi rebels, who usually operate from Yemen, are allies of Iran.
